OK, perhaps “famous” is too strong a word. Even by Myanmar standards, it is not quite an “A” list destination. Think of it as the Marble Falls of Myanmar, except replace the Bluebonnet Café with a cave full of Buddhas. We love being on our own, but also see the advantage of guided tours. During her research, she came across a Canadian named Dustin Main who has visited Myanmar over a dozen times in 5 years and has started a small travel business. He seemed to have an instinct for quirkiness and edginess while also understanding what is too much for the average Western tourist (e.g., sleeper busses). During this ride, we lowered to within 50 feet of hippos and lions. We would then soar 1000 feet up to see the vast expanse of the plains and the distant mountains. I am embarrassed to say that I did not know it existed 6 months ago. Admittedly, knowing about Bagan is not needed to navigate our lives in the US, but I have always thought of myself as a closet anthropologist. As a child, I was fascinated with Egypt, Greece and Rome. When I saw that English gardens would place fake ruins, I understood.
